The Internet is a powerful communication and collaboration tool. All organisations can gain huge competitive advantage from incorporating web technology as a core part of their business processes, Directors, Partners and Managers have to balance this with their legal responsibility to maintain digital safety.

All employees have a legitimate expectation to be free to use equipment which is provided to them They also have a legal right to be able to access IT systems which protects their online welfare and safety However there is a darker side to the internet, inappropriate images, offensive content, time wasting, bullying, data loss and identity theft. Firms of all kinds need to be aware of these dangers and need to take care to protect their reputation, preserve their clients data and maintain their duty of care to their employees.

All firms especially Professional Services firms are under a legal obligationto ensure that all employees access the Internet in a secure and responsible way. Failure to provide the right environment could result in brand damage and legal action being taken against individuals, the organisation and/or Directors of Partners.

Access to online material should reflect the diverse cultural needs of a modern organisation some of whom will have specific values and beliefs which will need to be reflected in the Acceptable Use Policy.

Every organisation should have either an individual or a committee member who is responsible for E-Safety who will set and monitor the Acceptable Use Policy document and maintain standards.
